Viterbi Decoder

In digital communication, a Viterbi decoder is used to reverse the effects of a convolutional encoder applied at the transmitter. By analyzing the received signal trellis, it recovers the original bit stream with optimal error correction. It is widely employed in telemetry, satellite communications, and aerospace data links where signal quality over RF channels must be maximized.

Viterbi decoding is used wherever convolutional coding is applied to protect data transmitted over noisy or fading RF channels. In aerospace and defense telemetry, it recovers flight test PCM data with reduced bit errors. Lumistar supports Viterbi decoding at rate 1/2 with constraint length k=7 as the standard NASA configuration.
